Black Gold sits at No. 1 on Netflix South Africa's daily chart after BET Africa closed, with five episodes available and more still to come.
Black Gold has found a second life. The South African drama, first broadcast on BET Africa in 2025, is on Netflix and has climbed to No. 1 on the service's daily South African chart.
The return puts a local production back in front of viewers after the channel that commissioned it closed. Five episodes were available on Netflix by Monday, 26 October, with further episodes due to follow, according to the Mail & Guardian. Netflix lists the show as a 2025 South African drama and places it among its new releases in the country.
Set in KwaZulu-Natal, Black Gold follows the Zungu family as a fight over land, power and inheritance draws its members into sugarcane farming and illegal mining. Nomalanga Shozi leads the cast as Amandla Zungu, a young woman forced to confront the forces threatening her family's legacy.
The ensemble includes Dawn Thandeka King as Florence Zungu, Sello Maake Ka-Ncube as Tom Motsepe, Ernest Ndhlovu, Zamani Mbatha, Mbali Ngiba, Nomsa Buthelezi, Thulani Mtsweni and Siphesihle Vazi. The series was created by Mandla N. and Mpumelelo Nhlapo and produced as a BET Africa and Black Brain Pictures co-production.
When the show launched on 18 August 2025, DStv presented it as a new daily BET drama airing at 18:30. It was also Shozi's first lead role in a television drama. Its original run extended to 103 episodes between August and December 2025.
That length is why the streaming return is more than a short catalogue add. Black Gold was built for daily viewing, with a long story and a large local cast. Netflix's staggered release gives the drama a new route to viewers while keeping an episodic rollout.
BET Africa and MTV Base stopped broadcasting on DStv on 1 January 2026 after Paramount Africa closed its South African offices. The change left Black Gold without the platform on which audiences first watched it.
Its arrival on Netflix restores access to a recent South African production that might otherwise have dropped out of circulation. The No. 1 daily ranking is a sign that viewers went looking for it. Independent chart tracker FlixPatrol recorded the drama at the top of Netflix South Africa's television list on Sunday, 25 October, after three days in the Top 10.
Daily platform charts are snapshots. They are not a measure of lifetime viewing, and Netflix's public weekly Top 10 is reported separately. The early result is still a strong signal for a show returning without a new linear broadcast campaign.
The series joins other South African titles that have used streaming to reach an audience beyond their original television window. For performers, writers and producers, that longer shelf life is the practical point: a programme can be found again after a channel closes, a schedule changes, or a first run ends.
For viewers this week, the facts are narrower. Black Gold is back. Its first five episodes are streaming. A KwaZulu-Natal story that left with BET Africa is, on FlixPatrol's Sunday reading, the top television title on Netflix South Africa's daily chart. More episodes are still to come.
