Nathaniel Junior Oliphant has announced his departure from Generations: The Legacy after a decade on the SABC1 soapie.
Oliphant, who played Mpho, shared the news on 20 September, closing one of the longer continuous character runs in the current version of the franchise. His departure comes at a time when Generations: The Legacy is again reshaping its cast and storylines while holding onto one of the most recognisable brands in South African television.
For viewers who have followed the soapie through its post-2014 era, Mpho became part of the programme’s long-term furniture. The character evolved from a younger supporting presence into a detective with increasingly adult storylines and responsibilities.
That continuity matters on daily television. Soapies depend on familiar faces to give newer characters and plotlines a sense of history, and losing an actor after ten years changes more than a single storyline. It removes a piece of continuity viewers have been carrying across seasons.
The SABC has previously confirmed a number of cast departures and schedule changes around Generations: The Legacy. The programme also moved to a new 20:30 slot earlier this year as SABC1 refreshed its prime-time line-up.
Oliphant’s exit therefore lands during a broader period of adjustment for the show rather than as an isolated change.
What has not yet been publicly detailed is how Mpho will leave the story, or whether the door is being left open for a future return. For now, the confirmed fact is simpler: after ten years, Oliphant says his run on Generations: The Legacy is over.
