The Ramaphakela sequel debuted at No 2 in South Africa and Kenya, behind only Animals, and at No 6 in Nigeria after its first three days on Netflix.
The South African romantic comedy premiered on Friday, 16 October, and in Netflix's weekly Top 10 for 12 to 18 October it sits second among films in South Africa. That came from only three days on the service.
The one film ahead of it is Animals, which was in its second week and also leads the global English-language chart. Seriously Single Too finished above Doing Life, which was in its third week on the South African list.
The sequel did as well in Kenya, where it is also second behind Animals. In Nigeria it entered at sixth, on a list that includes the Nigerian film Oversabi Aunty at second.
It did not make either of Netflix's global Top 10 film lists for the week, English or non-English. Netflix ranks titles on these lists by views, and the three African charts show the film found viewers outside South Africa in its first weekend.
Fulu Modibedi returns as Dineo and Tumi Morake as Noni, the best friends from Seriously Single, which Netflix released on 31 July 2020. Modibedi was credited as Fulu Mugovhani on the first film. The sequel's cast also includes Buntu Petse, Keke Mphuthi, Yonda Thomas, Thabiso Rammusi, Motlatsi Mafatshe and Harriet Manamela.
Rethabile and Katleho Ramaphakela direct again for their company, Burnt Onion Productions. Netflix's synopsis turns the first film around: the two friends are set on hitting the party scene together until Noni's boyfriend unexpectedly proposes. The trailer, released in September, moves the story from Johannesburg to a Cape Town bachelorette trip that puts the friendship under strain.
Burnt Onion has another Netflix release close behind. How to Ruin Diwali: Meet The Parents, a spin-off of the How to Ruin franchise made with Urban Vision and producer Jayan Moodley of The Kandasamys, is listed for 30 October.
Netflix's next weekly list, covering 19 to 25 October, will show whether Seriously Single Too holds its place over a full week.
